School Update & Projects

In which I give a status update on my academic standing and future as well as “handyman” projects

I just got my latest standings in my computer architecture and networking course. I got an 88% on the second of three exams. (I managed to get one question thrown out and she threw out another so it was bumped to 92%.) I have the second highest grade in the class and am on track to get a very high A-. I put together a couple of discussion groups before the exam that I hope helped some other people too. Between the discussion groups and the rumored curve that the instructor applies at the end of the year, I hope to end up with a full A.

My Visual Basic professor just returned our third assignment. I got a 50/50 on it and the comment, “your usual good work”. I suppose it makes sense considering how much programming experience I have. I am solidifying my A+ grade and will have to work pretty hard to mess it up.

I have managed to jump through all the hoops to get registered for winterim (“winter break” for all you elitist folks from the coast) and spring semester. I will be taking Advanced Business Writing over winterim, then Math for the Information Sciences, Interactive Wed Programming, and the dreaded Applied Software Development Project. That should be everything that I need to graduate. If all goes well, I’ll have a sheepskin in six months.

In the meantime, I am continuing to amuse myself with “handyman” projects. I am afraid of my heating bills this winter so I have been making an effort to minimize the impact. All the windows have plastic on them now. Today I replaced the weatherstripping on the front door. It’s made a noticeable difference to the temperature in the living room. I’m going to pick up another kit for the back door, hopefully tomorrow.

Joyce had me come over to replace the showerhead in their upstairs bathroom. I figured it would be a trivial task. That was before I broke the pipe inside the wall trying to get the old showerhead off. I came back the next day with the parts to repair the damage. I am pretty sure that it’s better now than when I started, but it really needs a brace put in the wall. I can’t do that without ripping the wall apart so it’s been postponed for now.
