Halloween & Birthdays

In which I party like a madman for Halloween and other peoples’ birthdays.

I have some catching up to do so this entry is going back quite awhile.

On November 1, there was a second birthday party for Matt and Ian’s bar. Costumes were optional. I showed up early to lend a hand. I tried my hand at baking pumpkin seeds. I added some soy sauce and garlic before I baked them. It almost worked well but the extra soy sauce burned on the surface of the baking pan and added a burnt flavor to all the seeds. Oh well, I’ll know better next time.

Even though costumes were optional, it seemed like everyone was going to show up in one. I hadn’t thought of a costume yet. Luckily I was wearing jeans and a black mock turtleneck. I also had my glasses and my new PowerBook G4. So I made a perfect impromptu Steve Jobs. (Okay, maybe not perfect…)

Quite a crowd showed up. Pat’s straitjacket was a big hit. Almost everyone tried their hand at playing escape artiste. The bar admirably performed its duty of dispensing booze. Taco dip, carmel apples, candy, and more was available to sate hunger. I think it’s safe to say that the party was a hit.

My pictures of the event are uploaded and captioned.

On Sunday I watched the Packers play at Pat’s. Pat and I had this tradition of keeping a single beer (a can of Bud Light) in the fridge and taking it out for Packer games. We had the same can for over two years. That tradition has been renewed.

The following weekend was Ian and Saryn’s birthday. They had both seen my Blast! DVD and loved the show. Saryn found out that the traveling show was coming to the Weidner Center. So the three of us picked up some tickets and headed off to Green Bay on Saturday. We caught the afternoon show. It was amazing. The show is much better in person. Not only do you get the full effect of the instruments but they modified several of the numbers. It seems like some of them were simply being adjusted for a smaller stage, but others (like Lemontech) have been seriously reworked. We also managed to catch the little show they give in the lobby during intermission.

After the show was over we headed to Appleton. Ian suggested that we eat at Koreana. Mmmm, it was very, very good. Ian shared his sushi (including kim-chi sushi and big spider sushi). Saryn had the Bi-Bim-Bahb and I got the pork Bul-Go-Gi Korean barbecue. We washed everything down with drinks including sake martini, sake cosmopolitan, and chocolate elephant.

Next we watched the eclipse from a Barnes & Noble parking lot and went book shopping. Then we headed back to Stevens Point. Once we got back, we hung out at Ian, Pat, & Sarah’s. To wrap up the birthday evening, Pat and I ran out and got Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle and cake and ice cream. At least the cake and ice cream was good…

Sunday was Packers and Adult Swim at Pat’s again.

More to come. I am too tired to continue tonight but at least I am less far behind.
