In which I talk about Turkey(-less) Day and movies
It’s been an interesting Thanksgiving so far. Mom and I took Grandma to Door County on Thursday. We met my uncle Dave and his clan at their condo at The Landmark Resort. I don’t get to see that side of the family too often and it was nice to get to talk with them for awhile. We had Thanksgiving Dinner at the Mission Grille. It was a very good meal but, well, it wasn’t a Thanksgiving dinner. I mean, it didn’t even have turkey. (And the sausage in the Italian sausage stuffing was a little overpowering.) We also didn’t do the traditional giving of thanks before the dinner (which might have been awkward in an upscale restaurant). We headed back home after dinner. Since then I’ve just been hanging out at home. Mom has threatened me with chore day tomorrow. I am not entirely sure what she has in mind…
This pretty much describes the coming of winter this year. I wish I had done a little more outside before the temperature dropped but there’s still plenty to keep me busy.
Joyce got an inside line on a midnight showing of Rent this past Wednesday. She managed to get tickets for herself, Saryn, and me. The audience consisted of every high school drama student in the tri-county area and us. The audience broke into applause as soon as Jonathan Larson’s name came up and they sang along with the songs as the credits rolled. (After the house lights came on there was a lull and a woman’s voice was heard saying, “Let’s go. I have a fucking psych exam tomorrow,” followed by a much quieter, “I think I said that a little too loud.”) It was a strange experience. I liked the movie itself. It was flawed but very enjoyable if taken for what it is.
I’ve been watching a lot of movies lately. (Well, for me, anyway.) Another one that I caught under odd circumstances was Mirror Mask. Originally it wasn’t going to play in Wisconsin at all but then it got a date in a small Milwaukee theater. Endo decided that he wanted to catch it a few weekends ago and that he wanted me to drive. So we made the trip down, caught the movie, and drove back. Normally if I go to the bother of driving to Milwaukee, I like to stay for awhile. But the quick trip was kind of a refreshing change. As for Mirror Mask, it is pretty much a retelling of Labrynth for the goth crowd. It’s a hell of a ride if you are into that kind of thing. Which I am. Thumbs up.
